TOKYO, JAPAN, December 2, 2021 — NTT DOCOMO, INC. (DOCOMO) and NEC Corporation (NEC) have passed the interoperability tests for 5G Autonomous (SA) using a 5G Base Station Baseband Unit (5G CU / DU) that meets the Open Interface Specifications O -RAN and to radio units (RU) from different suppliers.

The multi-vendor interoperability test used a software upgrade to introduce SA capability to NEC’s non-autonomous 5G CU / DUs (NSAs) running on DOCOMO’s commercial network. As a result, the system has been transformed from a 5G NSA system to a 5G SA system using the same 5G CU / DU hardware. Since 5G CU / DU can also adapt to existing NSA, the unit can be used to flexibly and quickly upgrade a 5G network.

In the future, both companies aim to introduce 5G CU / DU for DOCOMO SA services to further expand their 5G services.

The SA system allows network operators to flexibly deliver services that take advantage of 5G functionalities, such as eMBB (enhanced Mobile Broadband), mMTC (massive Machine Type Communication) and URLLC (Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications), enabling the various demands of 5G to be supported, including the improvement and sophistication of solutions for business customers.

In addition, as the range of interoperable 5G base stations expands with multi-vendor connectivity, coverage areas can be flexibly designed based on the number of users and departments by leveraging the strengths of each. provider. This should allow the rapid deployment of 5G coverage areas.
