Lake Cowichan RCMP warn detachment phone line spoofed

Lake Cowichan RCMP are warning the public that there appears to be someone using the Lake Cowichan RCMP non-urgent number to make unsolicited calls.

Over the past 24 hours, the Lake Cowichan RCMP have received a number of reports that someone called them from the Lake Cowichan RCMP non-emergency line. The caller ID displays as the Lake Cowichan RCMP, but when the caller answers the phone, the caller hangs up. In cases where the call is missed, no message is left.

Typically used by scammers, this spoofing method disguises the phone number appearing on the Caller ID display and allows scammers to disguise their calls and trick people into answering their phones and calling them back. trust the caller.

We want to reassure the public that if someone from the Lake Cowichan RCMP tries to reach you, we will not hang up when you answer and leave a message asking you to return our call, said the Sgt. Lita Watson of the Lake Cowichan RCMP.

These calls now have a direct impact on the public’s ability to reach the Lake Cowichan Detachment and we hope this is not an intentional or malicious tactic used to flood our phone lines and monopolize our resources, added Watson. Lake Cowichan RCMP have launched a public mischief investigation and we are actively investigating.

If you receive a call from 250-749-6668 and no message asks you to call back, please do not return the call. If an agent needs to talk to you, they’ll leave a message or try to reach you later.

In the meantime, if you need to file a police report and cannot reach the Lake Cowichan RCMP by phone, please visit the Lake Cowichan Detachment and file your report in person.
