Ekiti 2022: ex-governor Oni abandons the PDP
Former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni has dropped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Confirming the development on Saturday to Ado-Ekiti in a telephone conversation, Oni’s spokesperson, Mr. Adebayo Jackson, said the decision of Oni and thousands of his supporters to leave the PDP was taken during of a stakeholder meeting held at Oni’s residence in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the State.
Oni, however, did not indicate with whom he would pitch his tent; although speculation is rife that the ex-governor may join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to contest the gubernatorial ballot.
He said Oni bowed to pressure from the overwhelming majority of Ekiti who wanted him to be sent home from government under any political party.
The former PDP publicity secretary has hinted that the former governor will leave the PDP with a significant membership, adding that his resignation from the party is with immediate effect.
He said, “Eng. Segun Oni eventually resigned from the PDP. Everyone in Ekiti decided they want Segun Oni on any platform. And he had answered their calls. In fact, it was Oni’s image that promoted PDP’s image in Ekiti State.
And once the PDP has decided to commit suicide, we must bow down and leave. “Ekiti people won’t leave Oni alone to do this because they can’t see any other person who can offer what Oni has done for them.
“So it is the voice of the people and not the voice of anyone. As it stands, PDP and APC will face each other against the people of Ekiti. And the symbol of the people of the state of Ekiti is Engineer Oni.
Also taking the floor, former director of campaign organization Segun Oni, Hon. Lanre Ogunsuyi, said the exit of the former governor was informed by a high degree of injustice cast in Oni by some powerful party forces in the January 26 primary elections.
He said: “We just said goodbye to PDP and Oga thanked all the people who worked with him and dissolved all the structures that ran the so-called primary in PDP. What we have now is a confluence of people called the Segun Oni Movement.
By next week we should be on our way according to the INEC schedule. “It is normal to speculate about politicians, especially a politician of Oni stature. He is a former governor and he has just left the PDP.
What is certain is that we have left PDP, but we do not know where we are going
